From pilots to plants

Several packaging producers now operate commercial-scale facilities that return post-consumer plastics to food-grade quality. The processes are energy intensive but avoid the quality degradation that limits mechanical recycling.

Scale has improved yields and lowered per-tonne costs, though output remains a small share of total packaging demand.

Collection is the constraint

Recyclers need clean, sorted, predictable feedstock. Where collection systems are fragmented, plants run below capacity and costs rise. Deposit return schemes and standardised sorting consistently improve both volume and material quality.

Policy sets the demand floor

Recycled-content requirements give producers a reason to pay a premium for secondary material. Without them, recycled feedstock competes directly with virgin polymer prices that track oil markets.
